Creosote Stages (1, 2, 3)
Creosote accumulates in three progressive stages. Stage 1: light, dusty soot easily removed by brushing. Stage 2: crunchy, flaky black deposits requiring vigorous sweeping. Stage 3: hard, glazed, tar-like coating that is extremely difficult to remove and highly flammable — the most dangerous stage and primary cause of chimney fires.
